Sechelt to Powell River

This coming weekend we will be travelling with Alder II from Sechelt to Powell River.  The trip starts with a 2 hours run north up the Sechelt Inlet.  Followed by a further 5 hours out into Jervis Inlet and then to the the Strait of Malispina.  Sechelt Inlet is surrounded by coastal mountains rising up thousands of feet with water depths of 200 m.  For the first 14 knots from Tillicum Marina until we reach the Sechelt Rapids where the depth drops to 40 m, apparently this is due to glaciers that formed here floating at their end in the ocean and as a result the final section of the inlet was not ground out by the force of the ice.  As a result a bottle neck if formed that generates the second fastest tidal currents in the world, upto 16 knots or 30 km an hour.  We have plans to go through the rapids when the current is slack and not when the water is rushing in or out of the inlet.  For us it is our first rapids transit and we very excited to make this passage.

    1. It went fantastic – the boat ran well and we had a great time. Thanks for the bits and pieces you dropped off for the radio and wood etc. Much appreciated. James
