An old tradition is to lay a ‘lucky coin’ under the mast of the boat for good sailing. So as part of the refinishing of the mast and boom for the boat was the installation of a coin under the mast. The coin was a Canadian quarter from the same year that the boat was built – 1948.
The mast and boom were sanded back to remove the loose varnish. Then the mast and boom were coated with 3 coats of an oil based varnish. Then 5 coats of the water based Sea Gold. The final appearance was very nice, but we will see how it holds up over time.

There was also rot in the base of the mast resulting in the mast being loose in the holder. I used Rot Fix epoxy, glued in sister wood pieces and finally epoxy wood. The mast is solid now. There is also a small extension on the top to allow installation of a anemometer. The anemometer also provides GPS to the radio.

The coin was not so lucky as it moved on installation and slowed the installation by an hour, what can i say … boats.
